John Painter was aged 23, and he was employed in the Midland Railway Locomotive Department shops. He was also a member of the Spondon Liberal Club. He was called up with the reserves in 1914, after serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps Territorial Force. Just prior to his death he wrote home to say 'he was expecting leave for a few days and looking forward to a visit home.'
Both his father and his grandfather had previously served in the Grenadier Guards.
